When choosing fabric, it’s important to consider its intended use carefully. Will the piece be in daily use, in which case the fabric should be water-washable and dirt-resistant, or is it a rarely used accent chair, where the requirements are lighter?

Natural fibers feel pleasant to the touch, while synthetic fibers improve abrasion resistance. That’s why many fabrics are blends of the two.

It’s also worth thinking ahead about which space the furniture will go into. You can bring a photo of the room or bring along textiles that the upholstery should match. You’re also welcome to borrow fabric samples to take home.
